It was night already, a dark night with no moon and Castiel had a moment to freak out before Dean fulfilled his promise.

He was leaving,

He was going to die

He was going to be gone…

What about Claire?

What about Lucifer?

What about the planet; this world?

What about Dean? Would he be okay?

“NO!!” Dean had found Chuck and sent him to bring Donna and Jodie, and tell Claire to come to his cabin. Now the blonde girl, who was always so serious and locked her feelings away, was a rabid hurt thing pushing and punching Dean after he told her. “You’re wrong! you’re wrong!!” she said sobbing, eyes closed and face with tears running down her cheeks. “You’re wrong!! You’re just jealous because you don’t have anyone left!!”

Jodie scrunched her face as she tried to control her, Dean was pale and looking down tolerated everything. “Why didn’t you help him?! Why you stayed here while he was risking himself against your stupid brother…” she took her gun out. “You’re not gonna kill my dad!!”
He never raised a hand, not even when his nose started bleeding or when he staggered back at the strength of Claire’s despair. The barrel of her gun was inches away from him when he finally made eye contact. “It’s your fault… it is, it is all your fault!” she said even when Jodie had her already by the arm and took the gun away. “why you want to take him from me?”

“NO, Claire...” Castiel was there to hold her, she hugged him and they collapsed to the floor on a heap.

“Don’t go, please, not again… pleasepleaseplease… don’t leave me…” Castiel’s face scrunched as he held the girl close to him.
Jodie went to Dean and hugged him soothing him; trying as hard as she could not to cry herself.

Dean sat on the floor outside his cabin for a while until Castiel and Claire spoke.

“I need you to be brave…” Castiel had said. “Be brave, I know you can, you’ve been already so, so brave.” he kissed her forehead before looking deep into her eyes. “I am not your dad…”

Claire gasped hurt and started blabbering reasons why he was her dad, the time he spent with her, the times they shared runs, the fact that he had taken care of her since he came back into her life.

“You are my dad… I don’t care what happened; you’re the only dad I have…”

Castiel smiled holding her hand. “I know, I’m not your dad… but I’ll be very lucky if I were…” Claire sobbed. “and when I get wherever I’m going I’ll fight with everything in me to go to see Jimmy and your mom, and I’ll tell them the amazing, brave, strong woman their daughter is.”

She hugged him once more. “I love you… please don’t leave me, dad….” She buried her face in his chest and he held her rubbing a hand on her back. He could see through a window Dean was out there with the most painful heartbroken expression. “please don’t leave me…” she repeated.

“I’m sorry…” Castiel hugged Claire as she tried her best to be stoic. “I wish I could stay here with you…” and whispering on her ear. “You have to be brave, and you have to be careful… and as a personal favor to me, please watch after Dean, you have to be brave; once he’s gone you’re to take care of everything.”

He tried to reassure her; she was strong and brave and a natural leader. “Maybe there was a reason for all your pain…” he said hoping she would live a long boring life one day.

He let Jodie hug him and smoothed his shirt so many times looking into his eyes before kissing his brow like a real mother would have done, he spent hundreds of years seeing that and always wondered what it felt like. Chuck cried silently before doing his best to hug him without leaving a wet trail on his shirt. “Keep me a place near you up there Cas, if I’m going I want to be near you forever.” He smiled as Chuck sniffled.

Dean… was standing at the door, expression hard and emotionless once more, even if Castiel knew he was in pain.

It was all tears and silence in the end, a funeral for someone not dead yet.

Castiel was the one crying. “Dean… I’m ready…” he said after taking a deep breath.

Dean had his eyes filled with tears and swallowed twice before trying to speak to end up closing his mouth and nodding making the tears fall. They walked into Dean’s cabin once more where Dean prepared his gun all this while crying nonstop.

“Castiel…” he said searching for the once-angel.

Cas had gone away trying once more to school his features into disinterest and clam, nervousness was filling him, fear of the unknown to come. “Here…” he answered after a moment; he didn’t want his voice sounding off.

Dean appeared behind him holding a random black gun. “I want one thing Dean…” Cas said turning deep blue eyes on Dean’s. “No matter what, don’t blame yourself.” Dean’s face cracked and he started sobbing again. “I did what I did to save the world, so be brave Dean, I will be watching over you…” he lied, Castiel had no idea where he was going; he moved closer and planted a palm over his friend’s head as he bent down crying at his words.

Dean kept repeating he was sorry. “It’s okay…” Castiel smiled. “I’m ready…”

He sat on the floor in a perfect lotus position and took a deep breath.  “I remember when I was an angel… maybe I can go back to that…” Dean let out a sound of pain. “I remember the feeling of light, the smell of rain on the clouds, the feeling of my wings and…” his smile was so stupid it made Dean’s heart clench painfully. “And when I was sent to get you? I remember I followed the clearest of sounds, and the brightest of souls…” he opened his eyes seeing his friend standing right there next to him, gun in hand and eyes as green as emeralds rimmed in red. “I knew you were special, I knew that my foolish heart had to be right, you were special.” Dean bit his lips and looked up; portrait of pain and sorrow. “I will ALWAYS remember I loved you from the second I touched your soul…”

Dean sobbed closing his eyes tight when the blue clear, honest eyes of the angel found them “Cas, close your eyes, please…”

Cas obeyed. “I love you…” he said.

He never heard the sound of the shot; he never heard if Dean answered.

The end.
