not the series but the idea...
I was thinking about heroes, I remember the time when the idea/ideal of a superhero was someone perfect, full of good things, ideals and good deeds. Powers aside,a superhero was a person who wante to change the world into a better place.
Most if not all old/back then superheroes were older, grown up people, Superman was righteous and always sure of doing good. Batman was maybe the darkest but was as great as any other, all of them had one goal, to protect inocent people, to prevent crime, to fight all kinds of evil, and all that was ok.
What about that? nothing, it was great, every kid I remember from my time wanted to grow up to be more or less like some superhero, even the not so adult ones, like Spiderman or human torch were good role models, decent persons even hiden in douchery, you could see the soft inside of those hard faccades.
even those who had something bad in their pasts, as Example The Punisher or Batman, they changed methods but kept the main idea, do what was right at the moment even in not so right ways, but their ways never made them doubt of what they had to do, just the how, that's the main contrast with the nowadays heroes
Acourding to importance first was Batman, who in this world wouldn't want to be batman when you grow up? I did, since I saw him for first time, still in almost purple tights and folowed by psichodelic Robin, I wanted to be a superhero and a boy superhero because girl superheroes were weak, and most of the time had no real superpowers, except Spider woman, but she was non the less lame, this is not about differences made between girls and boy superheroes, but the fact that I wanted to be one of them, Green lantern was my second fav, wanted to use green all the time, and had a ring aswell, for what being a green lantern represented, I had my first self deffence class because of them, I never cheated in exams or anything because of them, helped others, and always choosed right because that's what a good guy does.
Now, we have failed superheroes, and that makes them more human, and that's ok, I guess, for those who have a self image forged already, but whatabout kids on this generation? every day the heroes on cartoons or comic books are younger, no longer the oldest versions, they are re-inventing characters to fit them into teens or pubescent kids, just look Cartoon Network.
Its ok, I'm not against cartoon network or anything, superheroes to me is like x-boxes for 40's people or 30 something guys going to arcades still, not bad just part of what we had while growing up, I still buy stuff related to them, I still wear green tee's or green pants every now and then because of green lantern, because he reminds me of the right thing to do.
Even if I find new superheroes different still watch shows -animated shows, yes I do- whenever I have the time, but then there's this that bothers me, the failed- more human and the teen or close to teens superheroes are no longer figures you can look up to, every time they are more and more tempted and sometimes succumb to that temptation, that's what scares me, what is the message there "is ok to be bad every now and then, as long as you choose do good sometimes too?" I beg to disagree "don't worry thinking about the right thing, you can do whatever you feel like because you have superpowers, because you're special", "you can disrespect your elders/teachers/sister/others because you're oh-so-special" and lets not mention drugs and others, I might be missing something there, ok I'd change my mind if that's the case, if someone can point to something I misss in this picture.
we're lowering the bar, we're creating a new generation that no longer wants to do the right thing and follow a hero and his ideas, but a bunch of kids that are wreckless and do whatever they want just because they can, you think its what we want?
When I say we're lowering the bar I meant it, as in education, we used to read at least ten books in ayear for literature classes and was like one book for every what? three weeks? now they have one or two books every year and still can't finish it, can't sumarize things and its ok? is not about Superheroes anymore is it? well yeah, because I still remember better times when wanting to be the best meant something more than having the more expensive purse or the best shoes, when wasn't about who you were dating but how much you knew.
maybe the screwed one is me.
The new *almost* teens superheroes that has not an authority figure, or that depict a superior figure as someone ridiculous that is not to be listen to is ruining our kids. all that of course in my opinion.
There's no more dreams of growing up and being good, doing the right things and all that. Those are gone, is just me acting like Grandpa Simpson? or is something that more people have seen?
